In advance of the Spending Round announcement, London Councils sent a submission to HM Treasury, setting out London’s current position and making suggestions on how local government can continue to deliver much needed services whilst driving economic growth. Do the Maths: Tackling the shortage of school places in London (2013 edition)

London boroughs have been warning for some years that pupil numbers are growing at a faster rate in the capital that elsewhere in the country. By 2016, the shortage of school places is set to reach 118,000.

Demographic trends including a higher-than-expected birth rate, greater rates of inward migration, and increasing numbers of parents staying in the capital after having children has led to an increasing shortage of school places in recent years.  As this demographic bulge moves through the school system increasing pressure will also be put on secondary schools and sixth forms.

Spending Round 2013 - submission from London Councils

The Spending Round will be announced on 26 June 2013 and will set out resources for individual departments in 2015-16.

In advance of the Spending Round announcement, London Councils has presented a submission to HM Treasury. 

London Councils recognises the Government’s twin objectives of deficit reduction and economic growth and believes that the forthcoming announcement signals a timely opportunity to re-assess how we, as London local government, can best contribute to these goals.

Transforming Rehabilitation Consultation Response

On 9th January 2013 government launched "Transforming Rehabilitation - a revolution in the way we manage offenders." This consultation laid out governments proposals for reforming the delivery of offender services in the community.

London Councils welcomed the opportunity and submitted a response on the 22 February 2013. The submission:

Looked After Children in London - an analysis of changes in the numbers

London Councils commissioned this study to find out the factors influencing the reduction of numbers of looked after children (LAC) in London. Department for Education (DfE) figures indicate that the number of children looked after by local authorities has been rising steadily across England in recent years, but that by contrast, the number of children who were looked after in London had decreased since 2007. This trend appeared to be continuing.
