London facing £17million Care Bill shortfall

Getting ready to deliver the Care Bill will leave London facing a £17 million funding shortfall, London Councils is warning.

Figures from London Councils, which represents all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, show boroughs need around £90 million to prepare for the new system, which comes into force in part from April 2015 (1). Costs include delivering additional care user assessments, setting up and managing care accounts, providing information and advice and handling deferred payments.  

Government moves on new homes investment

A new government review must end rules stopping councils building new homes, the government was told today (5 February).

Commenting on the launch of a government review into council housebuilding (1), Mayor Sir Steve Bullock, Executive Member for Housing at London Councils, told attendees at a Westminster event that government rules are holding back the construction of thousands of new homes.

London Councils calls for wrap-around welfare

Welfare reform will be more effective at getting claimants into jobs if councils are in charge of their support, according to a new report by London Councils.

In its report ‘Towards a new model of welfare’, London Councils, which represents all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, calls for locally-led wrap-around services to be set up to help claimants make and maintain Universal Credit and move into work.

Night flights – Londoners losing sleep

London Councils has responded to the second stage of the government’s consultation on night flights from Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted by repeating its call for a total ban on night time flying from 2017. At present there is no ban on flying from the three airports at night but a limit on take-off and landing is in place. At Heathrow this is currently 2,550 in winter and 3,250 in summer.
