Existing voter registration campaigns

There are a number of existing campaigns which target different audiences

 

Bite The Ballot

Bite the ballot homepageBite the Ballot is a registered Charity that targets 16 to 24 year olds.

Their aim

"To lay the foundations for every 16 year old in Britain, from 2020 onwards, to view political engagement and changemaking as habitual and a rite of passage." They say out of 7.4 million 16-24 year olds in England, only half are registered to vote and of those registered and eligible only 43 per cent turned out to vote in 2015."

 

Missing Millions

Mission Millions homepageMissing Millions is a campaign run by the Electoral Reform Society, which is a members' society and registered company. It targets everyone who is eligible to vote in England who has not registered to vote using the new system: Individual Electoral Registration.

Their aim

"The introduction of Individual Electoral Registration (IER) is a huge change to the way we do elections. It has to be done right. We want to see the government working closely with civic groups, electoral registration officers and others to ensure every last step is taken to maximise registration. Special care must be taken to prevent at-risk groups from failing to register and have their say at the election."

Operation Black Vote

Operation Black vote homepageOperation Black vote is a registered charity who target people who are eligible to vote from BAME communities.

Their aim

"At our core Operation Black Vote exists to ensure we have greater racial justice and equality throughout the UK. We work specifically, but not exclusively within the democratic and civic framework to deliver our objectives."

London Elects

london elects homepageAlthough part of the Greater London Authority (GLA), London Elects is politically impartial and operationally independent. It organises Mayor of London and London Assembly elections. They target people who are eligible to vote in Mayoral and London Assembly elections.

Their aim

"Delivering the public awareness campaign, designing and printing the ballot papers, and managing the counting of votes."

The Electoral Commission

electoral commission voters pageThe Electoral Commission are the independent elections watchdog and regulator of party and election finance. They target everyone who is eligible to vote who has not yet registered.

Their aim

"We work to support well-run elections and referendums in the UK, offering support and guidance to those involved. We also work to ensure voters know everything they need to know. We run campaigns before elections and referendums to make sure people are aware of when and how to register to vote and anything else they need to know. We carry out policy work across a range of areas. We want to ensure that the rules around all aspects of elections are as clear and simple as possible and that the interests of voters are always put first."

GOV.UK

GOV.UK resources pageThe Government funded a number of national charities who work with many different groups to develop resources which can be used to engage people in the democratic process. They are designed to motivate and inform those who are not on the electoral register and who do not have representation in the electoral process. These audiences include those who are homeless or in temporary accommodation, children, young people aged 16-24, people with learning disabilities.
