Benefit cap statistics: Statement from London Councils

Chair of London Councils, Mayor Jules Pipe, said: “Under the government’s welfare reforms, just under half of all households which have had their benefits capped live in the capital.

"Londoners are being unfairly penalised by a policy that fails to recognise that they face higher rents, a higher cost of living and strong competition for jobs.”

1. Data from the Department for Work and Pensions released today (Thursday 9 January) shows 32,940 households nationally have had their benefits capped since the introduction of the benefit cap in April 2013 up to November 2013. In London, 15,342 households are affected, which equates to 47 per cent of all households. Nine out of the ten local authority areas most affected by the benefit cap are in London.
