Plans for cycle routes 'in the sky' for London

A network of bike lanes built above existing railway lines has been suggested as a way to offer cyclists safe and fast routes across London.

With cyclist numbers expected to triple within the next decade, ‘SkyCycle’ is an innovative solution to provide car-free routes around London. Backed by Network Rail and Transport for London, a network of 220km of cycle lanes could be built, with a suggested charge of £1 for use.

Attracting funding for the project will be key, with designers hoping to conduct a feasibility study as a next step. However, the question remains whether cyclists would use the network; a similar idea in California over 100 years ago was never completed, and the Pedway Scheme in the City of London was discontinued in the 1980s.
