London’s local authorities have an essential role in tackling violence against women and girls and supporting victims and survivors to be safe and rebuild their lives. Tackling violence against women and girls is a key priority under London Councils’ shared ambitions, our long-term vision for a city for all Londoners.
We are recruiting for a Principal Policy and Projects Officer to lead London Councils’ work in this area. In this role, you will lead on policy development relating to violence against women and girls (VAWG), advocating on behalf of London local government to work towards the best outcomes for victims and survivors. Key areas of responsibility are:
- Working with borough representatives and colleagues from the Greater London authority (GLA) and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) to develop and implement collaborative approaches to commissioning support in safe accommodation under the Domestic Abuse Act.
- Driving forward London Councils’ work to address challenges around funding and strategic commissioning for support services for victims and survivors, including working with London Councils senior leadership and partner organisations to scope and develop a London regional commission on strategic planning and commissioning.
- Applying your expertise in tackling VAWG to support London Councils’ response to the Casey review and ongoing work to reset the relationship between London local authorities and the Metropolitan police.
- Working with colleagues in housing to address challenges relating to domestic abuse and homelessness.
In this role, you will also be responsible for active horizon scanning, engaging with boroughs and partners and monitoring regional and national policy developments to identify opportunities to influence policy and improve practice.
Building strong relationships across a range of partnership organisations is an essential skill for this role. You will work closely with partners from London boroughs, the GLA, MOPAC, and central government departments. Strengthening relationships between London Councils and London’s independent specialist VAWG sector will be a priority.
You will work closely with the communications team to push forward London Councils’ policy priorities in relation to VAWG. You will provide policy briefings to London Councils’ political and officer leadership on issues relating to VAWG and provide agile and timely support to boroughs.
This role will sit within our Health, Care and Wellbeing Policy team. You will be working in a supportive, cross cutting policy team, which will provide you with opportunities to learn about a range of policy issues. Violence against women and girls is an issue that crosses over multiple policy areas enabling you to develop a strong strategic view of London local government. The role will offer the post holder the chance to work with elected Leaders and Mayors, Chief Executives and professional leaders from a range of disciplines.
