London Councils statement: Airbnb

Responding to the announcement by Airbnb on changes which will ensure entire home listings in London cannot be shared for more than the legislated 90 days, unless hosts confirm they have the required planning permission, Mayor Sir Steve Bullock, London Councils’ executive member for housing, said:

“Boroughs, London Councils and the Mayor of London have been in extensive discussions about concerns regarding Airbnb and we welcome this step by the company to ensure its activities do not have a negative impact on the capital’s already extremely challenging housing situation.

“There are currently nearly 50,000 properties listed on Airbnb in London and around 57,000 empty homes. Ensuring short-term rentals advertised with all providers are being used in line with planning laws is a vital step in tackling a housing crisis which impacts on all Londoners.”
