Ealing: vInspired

  • By London Councils

Ealing has teamed up with a national charity to get young people ready for the world of work through volunteering.

The council’s youth and connexions service works with vInspired to fund and deliver the vInspired Talent programme for people aged 16 to 25.

The programme supports young people into employment, education or training through meaningful and personalised volunteering placements in Ealing Council and with local organisations. It provides participants with the necessary skills, confidence and experience required for them to begin their careers, including a level two accredited qualification.

Volunteers are supported to directly influence the council services they are placed in, helping those services to more effectively engage and involve young people. They are tasked to design and deliver a social action project which will positively impact their local community. Young people attend a structured volunteer placement for six months for up to 12 hours per week, and can access training and support for an additional 12 hours per week.

For their time, young people receive up to £30 per week in expenses. Eighty-six per cent of the young people who completed the programme in 2013 moved into apprenticeships, traineeships, internships or employment.

Eighteen-year-old former volunteer Anisah Choudhry said: “The vInspired Talent programme gave me an insight into working life and a sense of routine. The Connexions service helped me prepare for this and supported me all the way through.”
