London Councils's response to the Clean Air Strategy

Cllr Julian Bell, Chair of London Councils’ Transport and Environment Committee, said

“London Councils welcomes the government’s commitment to improving air quality. Air pollution is a public health crisis and local authorities are leading the way on addressing poor air quality and reducing its impact on our communities.

“While giving councils improved powers and extra responsibilities to deal with air pollution is a welcome aim, the strategy lacks the detailed legal backing and practical guidance required to be effective, nor does it commit funding to enable councils to fulfil new responsibilities.

“Central government cannot just pass the responsibility onto local government without additional financial support”.
