Cllr Peter John OBE has been elected Chair of London Councils, the cross-party organisation which represents the 32 London boroughs and the City of London Corporation.
On his election, Cllr John set out his priorities for London over the next four years.
“London is a great city to live and work in, and the London boroughs are key to making it that way. The work of councils across London is vital to making our communities safer, cleaner, healthier and more prosperous.
"London Councils has an essential role to play in ensuring that the collective work and expertise of the boroughs is harnessed effectively in the service of London and Londoners.
"London Councils provides the key forum for helping the boroughs combine to make the case to Government, with the Mayor and others, for the funding, freedoms and powers to tackle the big challenges facing London from housing, infrastructure, skills and employment to transport, the environment and health and care.
"Ensuring London’s services are sustainably funded is a key priority, particularly in the context of the Government’s Fair Funding Review and the next Spending Review. We know children’s services and adult social care are under incredible pressure in the capital. We need to make the case for sustainable funding and why investing in prevention at local level represents good value for all Londoners.
"I look forward to working with borough Leaders and directly elected Mayors on a cross-party basis to make the case for London’s councils and to working with the Mayor, London MPs and others on behalf of London as a whole.
"The boroughs' unique position as servants and representatives of London’s local communities gives us a vital role in making London’s success work for everyone."
Cllr John was elected at London Councils’ Annual General Meeting, held today. He is Leader of Southwark Council and was formerly Deputy Chair of London Councils and Executive member for Business, Skills and Brexit.
