Responding to the latest statistics on affordable housing supply in England in 2015 to 2016, Mayor Sir Steve Bullock, London Councils executive member for housing, said:
“We know we are facing a full-scale housing crisis in London and that urgent action must be taken to address the yawning gap between the numbers of new homes being built and the housing needs of people and businesses.
“These latest figures highlight what we have long been calling for – a desperate need for thousands more homes, of a range of tenures, to be built in the capital.
“London’s boroughs are pulling their weight by granting planning permission for tens of thousands of houses across a range of tenures each year. However, the completion rates for housing remain low, and ministers need to work with the GLA and developers to ensure permitted housing is built out in the city.
“London Councils is working with the Mayor of London and other partners to ensure the Government’s housing policy works for Londoners – but we must now see a real commitment from Ministers to tackling the huge challenges we are facing.”
