Freedom Pass holders who have renewed their passes in time for this week’s switchover have been thanked by Cllr Julian Bell, Chair of London Councils’ Transport and Environment Committee. Cllr Bell also reassured those who have not renewed that their passes will still be accepted for a ‘grace period’ of six weeks.
Cllr Bell said: “I want to thank the 85 per cent of older persons’ Freedom Pass holders who have renewed in time for this week’s switchover. The vast majority of renewals have been done online, which has helped reduce the cost significantly.
“Over 770,000 Freedom Pass holders should now have their new passes which they can use immediately.
“If you have not renewed for whatever reason or have not yet received your pass please don’t worry. Your old pass will be accepted by Transport for London on the buses and tube and by staff on the railways. We have negotiated a ‘grace period’ when, although the card will not work on card readers, if you show it to staff they will accept it as valid for travel.”
The expiry date of every Freedom Pass is on the card. If someone’s Freedom Pass is due to expire on 31 March 2015 and they have not already renewed they are asked to call 0300 330 1433 or go to www.freedompass.org and renew as soon as possible.
NOTES TO EDITORS
- Freedom Passes are valid for a period of five years. Over the past six months, London Councils has written to all older persons‘ Freedom Pass holders whose passes are due to expire on 31 March 2015 asking them to renew and giving them the option in most cases to return a paper form or renew online.
- The letters were accompanied by a poster campaign with Transport for London and the Association of Train Operators (ATOC) as well as poster campaigns in council offices and libraries across London. There was also a digital advertising campaign.
- Around 85 per cent of Freedom Pass holders have already renewed and 74 per cent did so online.
- Anyone who renewed before 28 February 2015 will have received their new Freedom Pass and those who renewed after this date may also have received their new passes or will receive them soon.
