This week, London Councils Climate team were proud to launch the One World Living Single-Use Plastics Pledge.
The Single-use Plastics Pledge is an ambitious commitment which supports London boroughs to:
“Eliminate problematic single-use plastics and transition to reuse in council operations and delivered services by 2030"
Global plastic usage is increasing, and all London boroughs can play their part in reducing unnecessary and problematic plastics. Designed by boroughs for boroughs, the Single-use Plastics Pledge enables boroughs to take the boldest possible action. Alongside WRAP and ReLondon, the One World Living team have produced resources to help boroughs achieve their plastics ambitions as part of signing the Pledge.
We were delighted to host the launch of the Single-use Plastics Pledge with Councillors, Members and Officers from across the London boroughs at Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre in Tower Hamlets. Launch attendees took part in a unique plastics fishing experience in the docklands, organised by Hubbub, aboard their boats made from 100% recycled plastics. As well as being great fun getting out onto the water, the visit demonstrated the direct impact of plastics entering our waterways and the role that local authorities can play to reduce problematic plastic usage.
The Single-use Plastics Pledge is an essential opportunity for all London boroughs to reduce their plastics and demonstrate climate leadership. Thank you to the 5 boroughs who have already signed the pledge: Hammersmith & Fulham, Lewisham, Newham, Richmond and Wandsworth Councils! And a special thank you to the team at Hubbub and the Watersports centre for an excellent visit!
