Projects: Past and Present

Wanstead Walking Improvements

Wanstead is situated in the South West corner of the London Borough of Redbridge with a population of approximately 88,000. The town centre is characterised by a main high Street with 2 Central line Underground stations located at either end. A park separates the High Street from residential areas with a bus terminus located next to the park.

Redbridge focused a two year programme of walking improvements aimed at increasing walking for shorter trips centred around Wanstead High Street and the 2 Underground stations. £725,000 was dedicated to the scheme with 60% of the funding from Transport for London and 40% from Redbridge. The project was fully completed in April 2009.

The scheme aimed to take a holistic approach to the area around the High Street, rather than just the High Street itself and examined both vehicle and pedestrian traffic along, and to, the High Street with the aim of improving vehicle journey times, pedestrian safety, reducing crime and the fear of crime. Scheme elements included:

  • Relighting the High Street
  • Lighting the paths across Christchurch Park
  • Lighting The Green
  • Installing flat top entry treatments along the High Street
  • Ensuring all crossing points were fully accessible
  • Signage rationalisation
  • Re-paving area by bus terminus
  • Re-surfacing paths adjacent to the school and Tarzy Wood (commuter route)
  • Renovating 2 historic monuments
  • Installing new CCTV
  • Installing new cycle parking
  • Installing double yellow lines along one side of the High Street to ease traffic flow, and improve bus journey times

The main outcomes of this work (and associated work) have been:

  1. 122% increase in walking across Christ Church Park
  2. Improved bus journey times for buses along Wanstead High Street, W 13/14 and 66 due to the banning of parking
  3. A diverted bus route, route 66, along Wanstead High Street to serve New Wanstead
  4. The renovation of Wanstead and Snaresbrook Underground stations
  5. Fully accessible High Street
  6. Christ Church Park has become a designated route to school due to new lighting
  7. New, and DDA compliant, cycle parking
