Wanstead is situated in the South West corner of the London Borough of Redbridge with a population of approximately 88,000. The town centre is characterised by a main high Street with 2 Central line Underground stations located at either end. A park separates the High Street from residential areas with a bus terminus located next to the park.
Redbridge focused a two year programme of walking improvements aimed at increasing walking for shorter trips centred around Wanstead High Street and the 2 Underground stations. £725,000 was dedicated to the scheme with 60% of the funding from Transport for London and 40% from Redbridge. The project was fully completed in April 2009.
The scheme aimed to take a holistic approach to the area around the High Street, rather than just the High Street itself and examined both vehicle and pedestrian traffic along, and to, the High Street with the aim of improving vehicle journey times, pedestrian safety, reducing crime and the fear of crime.
