EU Funding Overview

The European Commission awards money in the form of grants in order to implement projects or activities in relation to European Union policies. These grants may be awarded within fields as diverse as research, education, health, consumer protection, protection of the environment, etc.

Grant beneficiaries are mainly private or public organisations, and exceptionally individuals, chosen by the European Commission for their capacity to implement the projects concerned.

The EU's funding structure and the associated instruments and programmes have been modified for the new 2007-2013 budgetary period. Funding opportunities for the 2007-2013 financial period can be structured in five categories:(1)

Regional Assistance:

Finances regional development within member states and aims to foster economic and social prosperity and reduce development gaps between regions.

Funding instruments under this category are: European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), European Social Fund (ESF), and Cohesion Fund. Initiatives include: Jeremie, Jessica, Jasper and Regional for Economic Change.

Community Programmes:

Financial assistance provided through various community programmes in fields such as: research, competitiveness and innovation, media, education, health, youth, culture, etc.

Funding instruments and initiatives under this category include: the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP), FP7, LIFE+, Public Health, Interoperable Delivery of European eGovernment Services to public Administrations, Businesses and Citizens (IDABC) , Marco Polo II, Culture Programme, Progress, Erasmum Mundus, Media 2007, Customs 2007, Europe for Citizens, Consumer programme, Youth In Action, eContentplus, Safer Internet plus, Integrated Action Programme in Lifelong Learning, Security and Safeguarding Liberties, Solidarity and Management of Migration Flows, Fundamental Rights and Justice, Fiscalis, Civil Protection Financial Instrument.
