The EU and transport

Transport is a key factor in the European economy and there is an increasing demand for efficient transport systems within Europe.

EU transport policy aims to:

  • provide a high level of mobility to people and businesses throughout Europe
  • protect the environment, ensure energy efficiency and security
  • promote minimum labour standards and protect the interests of passengers and citizens
  • encourage innovation and increase efficiency and sustainability of the growing transport sector
  • provide policy and initiatives are funded under the budget heading: "Competitiveness for Growth and Employment".

Relevant funding instruments for the transport sector include: the STEER programme within Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) and Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP), Marco Polo II, FP7, ERDF, INTERREG and LIFE+.
