The ALG is one of the biggest funders of the voluntary sector in London, investing approximately £28m per year in more than 400 groups providing a wide range of services across the capital.

In March 2004, the ALG appointed an independently-chaired Grants Review Board to investigate its future role and scope in funding the voluntary sector.

This summary report outlines the board’s recommendations for building on the strengths and achievements of the ALG grants scheme while addressing the concerns. The recommendations cover the following areas:

  • the purpose of the scheme and where it fits in the funding environment;

  • access to services and meeting needs, particularly outside central London;

  • the potential for savings;

  • the efficiency and effectiveness of the funding environment;

  • the scope of ALG funding.
