I am a young electric wheelchair user who lives in Battersea in Wandsworth and I need to use buses quite regularly.
Earlier this year my confidence was really knocked when on a number of occasions bus drivers refused to let me board the bus. I felt humiliated and, on one occasion, the driver closed the doors on my feet and drove off – I was hurt as a result. I stopped using buses for a while which meant I couldn’t get out as much as I would like.
I first found out about Transport for All via their website and I rang them to talk about these incidents. They made a complaint on my behalf and understood the daily challenges I face. It was good to speak to another wheelchair user who had used buses for years, and get advice on what my rights were and how to assert myself. I really valued the support I was given; it restored my confidence in using buses and I am preparing to go to university this year.
