I work for the University of Greenwich based at our Greenwich Campus. Prior to the walk to work scheme by Living Streets I paid for University parking adjacent to our campus. As part of the scheme I started parking about a mile and a half from the campus and walking in through Greenwich Park, which took me around 30 minutes each way. This didn’t add any extra time to my commute in to work as it was taking me an average of 30 minutes sat in traffic to do that last part of my journey anyway. The walk out probably adds around 20 minutes to my journey home.

After the walk to work scheme had finished I found that avoiding the 30 minutes sat in traffic had added 2-3 miles per gallon to the fuel consumption of my car over a tank of fuel and that I was feeling fitter in myself so I decided to continue the experiment. Last month I handed back my parking pass which will add a further £600 saving to my annual travel costs and while some days the walk in, or even worse the walk out up the hill, feels like hard work I think the overall benefits to my pocket and my waistband definitely make up for it. Without the scheme to start me on my way I’d still just be thinking about maybe giving it a go one day.
