I am a refugee from Sierra Leone. I used to be a teacher back in my home country, and I am trying to get back into teaching in the UK.
While teaching is my main goal, contributing to a better society remains a profound motivation in my choices. Therefore, I became parent governor at my daughters’ school. There I helped the school communicate its policies to parents and supported parents from minority communities who did not know much about education. The same motivations prompted me to volunteer with Refugees into Schools.
I learnt about schools and the education system in Britain but most importantly I contributed to improving the welfare of the community and raising awareness of refugees among pupils.
Refugees into Schools played an important role in my professional development, helping me to develop a useful network of people involved in education. Thanks to their contribution, I recently completed a work placement alongside many supply teaching jobs. And, while hoping I will soon become a school teacher in the UK, I would like to be involved in projects such as Refugees into Schools in the future.
