Public authorities are empowered, and in some cases required, to share personal information with other public authorities in a variety of situations.
In some circumstances, personal information can also be shared with private and voluntary organisations involved in the delivery of services for the public.
The power to share information does not override existing safeguards for disclosure of personal information contained in other legislation or the common law, such as the law of defamation, data protection principles set out in the DPA and duties of confidentiality.
