Compact and perfectly formed

The first ever London Compact Awards were a chance to showcase how some of the best examples of partnership working in London are helping to empower our communities, says London Councils head of grants, Ian Redding

Recent years have seen some of the most significant changes in local government in living memory, with responsibilities beginning to be devolved from central to local government accompanied by a drive for greater engagement with local communities.

These changes have focused on encouraging citizens to play a more active role in shaping the services they need and in developing a real stake in the services that are delivered for or to them, in many instances by their own community organisations.

The Compact and the Compact way of working that has been developed over the past 10 years is an important vehicle in helping promote the constructive working relationships needed to deliver such services.

Unfortunately, it has become common lore that Compacts sit on dusty shelves, brought out only to question things when they go wrong. But the recent London Regional and National Compact Awards prove that this rather cynical view is far from true in London today.

The winners of the awards reflected the variety of ways in which partnerships have come together. What they all have in common though is the recognition that partnerships can deliver results that could not be achieved by any one partner acting in isolation.
