Survey of Londoners
The results of the latest annual Survey of Londoners, commissioned by London Councils, show significant improvements in the public's perceptions of their local councils. Two out of three respondents said their council did a good job, and 58 per cent said their council was efficient - both are the best results since the survey began in 1990. There was also a big drop in the level of concern about council tax levels - although council tax is still the second biggest area of personal concern (behind crime). The survey asked 1,034 Londoners throughout the capital their concerns about living in London, and their opinions about local council services.

Waste collection should remain the boroughs’ responsibility
The Government has written to all London boroughs confirming that it believes local authorities should remain responsible for waste disposal. Karen Buck MP has tabled an amendment Opens in a new window to the GLA bill, currently being considered by Parliament, which would create a single waste authority for the capital as proposed by the Mayor of London Opens in a new window. Meanwhile, new Government statistics Opens in a new window show that when London boroughs’ recycling rates for 2005/6 are compared with similar large urban authorities in England, nine of the top ten performing authorities are London boroughs.
