Consultation on parking penalties and related charges during 2012 Games

London Councils is seeking your views on possible increases to parking penalties and related charges during Games-time. These proposals are designed to provide protection to local residents and businesses that may be adversely affected by increased demand for road space during the Games. A copy of the consultation document can be downloaded. Opens in a new window

However, we would prefer responses via our online survey Opens in a new window but responses received in any format will be considered equally. The closing date for responses is Friday 13 January.

Background

London Councils is responsible for determining, subject to approval by the Mayor and consideration by the Secretary of State for Transport, additional parking and related charges that apply on borough roads in London. These charges are:

  • Penalties for contravening parking regulations and restrictions
  • Penalties for contravening bus lane and minor moving traffic regulations
  • Fees for release of a vehicle from a clamp or a vehicle pound
  • Storage and disposal charges.

No change to the cost of parking is envisaged as this consultation relates to the level of fines.

The current policy adopted by London Councils in determining penalty charges is that these should be set at the lowest level to secure the necessary deterrence, subject to a coherent pattern of charges. Fees for release from pound, together with storage and disposal charges, should simply cover the costs of the operations with no element of penalty included.
