Cycling and walking

Providing relatively low-cost measures which support cycling and walking can have significant benefits for London.  Higher rates of waking and cycling will reduce congestion on the roads, increase capacity on public transport and improve London’s air quality. Promoting more active forms of travel also has significant health benefits for Londoners.

London Councils has welcomed the Mayor’s support for walking and cycling as set out in the Mayor’s Transport Strategy Opens in a new window, and we have worked closely with TfL to ensure that boroughs are fully involved in the implementation of measures such as the Cycle Hire Scheme Opens in a new windowand the Cycle Superhighways Opens in a new window. Given that the boroughs are responsible for 95% of the roads in London, they are key to delivering walking and cycling improvements in London. Our work in this area includes:

  • Ensuring borough concerns and priorities are taken into account in the future development and implementation of the Cycle Hire Scheme and Cycle Superhighways;
  • Supporting the development of Legible London Opens in a new window- a pedestrian wayfinding system that helps people walk around the Capital.
  • Maintaining the funding flexibility for boroughs to make road and public realm improvements that will increase rates of cycling and walking.
