Walking is a already a more significant transport mode in London than elsewhere in the UK where it only accounts for around a quarter of all trips, so London should be leading the way in terms of providing a safe and convenient pedestrian environment. Although walking already accounts for a significant share of all journeys in London, there is the potential for more trips in London to be made entirely by walking.
‘Breaking down barriers to walking in London’ – a report published in 2008 by London Councils, Living Streets and Walk London – identifies a number of barriers to walking in the capital and sets out a number of recommendations to increase walking in London. Some – but not all - of these were subsequently adopted in the Mayor’s Transport Strategy.
