About our work

Transport runs through all areas of London Councils’ work, and is a constant for us in terms of the services we provide as much as the policy we formulate.

Our policy work includes those areas in which we operate services ourselves (like mobility and freight), and other specific issues such as aviation, electric vehicles and road safety. In addition, we undertake work which pulls together all these policy areas in order to influence relevant national and regional policies (for example, the Mayor’s Transport Strategy). We also work to ensure London contributes to and benefits from the European sustainable transport agenda, by hosting the London European Partnership for Transport team. We firmly believe transport solutions are most effective when they are delivered with local people in mind. As a result, we lobby central and regional government for greater devolution of powers and funding, so that boroughs can achieve better results for their residents.

Key areas where London Councils develops policy include:

  • Rail
  • Aviation
  • Electric vehicles
  • Cycling and walking
  • Transport safety
  • Parking, highways and traffic
  • Transport Services

London Councils’ transport work is principally governed by our Transport and Environment Committee (TEC). TEC was established in 2000, and has a number of statutory and other functions. These include operating our transport services, setting parking penalties and running the Parking and Traffic Appeals Service, and establishing policy and guidance for pan-London transport and environment issues.
