Private legislation

London Councils, on behalf of all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, co-ordinates the work on Private Bills in partnership with the City of Westminster.

Every few years, London Councils ask the boroughs whether they have any requests for new local legislation and ideas across many subject areas come forward from different councils.  Before the Bill’s deposit, each and every London borough (and the City of London) voted on the Bill in a meeting of its full council, publicly advertised in a local newspaper.  The provisions in these Bills only apply to the Greater London area, and they enable London's boroughs to discharge their work more effective and efficient.

The two Bills we are currently co-ordinating in Parliament are:

  • The London Local Authority Bill [HL]
  • London Local Authority & Transport for London (No.2) Bill [HL]

Please follow the menu links below to find out more about each of these Bills.  The Parliament website also provides updated Bill documents and debate transcripts from Hansard as each Bill progresses.
