My Lord Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen.
On behalf of all those involved in the governance of London here this evening, may I thank you Lord Mayor most sincerely for the toast you have just generously offered to us. And can I also thank both you and the Lady Mayoress for the warmth of your welcome to us all and for your splendid hospitality this evening. May I also extend my thanks more broadly to the City of London Corporation – its Chief Executive Chris Duffield, its members and its officers – for all that the organisation does on London’s behalf. And, in particular, I want to take this opportunity to thank Stuart Fraser for his service to London’s governance over the past four years. Apart from being the Chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee here, Stuart has been a great source of support and advice to us at London Councils, where he has served on our Executive and Leaders’ Committee with distinction.
Stuart, I am sure that after you step down from the Chairmanship here in the spring, lots of us will still be seeing you in a variety of other settings. But can I say this evening, thank you for all you have done in your current role.
So, we have entered what promises to be, by any standards, an extraordinary year for London. The capital’s governance will be the centre of national political attention in the run up to the mayoral election in May. As you, Lord Mayor, have highlighted, we will be at the heart of celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June. And, of course, we will be the focus of international attention in July and August with the small matter of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
First up, of course, is that election.
Now, we will all have our political preferences, and our candidates, but tonight, of course, is not the occasion to dwell upon that. Regardless of who is in City Hall after May 3, we in London local government anticipate working closely with the Mayor and GLA to advance the interests of the Londoners we all serve. But we will also lay down some challenges for all of the candidates in the next few months. And they will be challenges rooted in our belief that that we achieve most for London when we work in a partnership that properly recognises the strategic and delivery roles of the Capital’s respective spheres of governance.
