National Dementia Strategy

Policy area: Health and adult social services

Dementia is a major healthcare concern in the UK with 570,000 people with dementia living in England and set to increase alongside the growing elderly population.

On 3 February 2009 Alan Johnson, Secretary of State for Health launched the National Dementia Strategy. The five year plan sets out initiatives designed to improve awareness and knowledge of the issue, ensure early diagnosis and improve GP training, services in General hospitals and Care homes as well as services aimed at Carers. There will also be joint health and social care funding to guarantee these improvements.

London Councils is to undertake joint work with boroughs and NHS partners to ensure that London’s response matches the needs for London's patients and  carers affected by the disease.
