Flood and Water Management Act

Policy area: Environment

The Flood and Water Management Bill received Royal Assent in April 2010.

The Act updates flood risk management legislation and places recommendations from Sir Michael Pitt's Review on a legislative footing. In particular, it introduces a new regime for flood and coastal erosion risk management placing local authorities at the centre of the management response to local flood risk - a new local leadership role. This raises a number of important issues for London boroughs specifically.

Below you can download our response to the draft flood and water management bill submitted in 2009. In it we raise concerns over the government’s initial proposals for:

  • Funding future responsibilities;
  • Local leadership on partnering and information sharing;
  • Skills capacity and training;
  • Surface water management planning; and
  • Sustainable drainage systems
