In May 2010, the London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Newham and Tower Hamlets, together with the London Development Agency (LDA), launched plans to work collaboratively to develop an international exemplar for low-carbon working.
The LDA outlined the concept of a 'Green Enterprise District' within the Thames Gateway in February 2010, in expectation of population and job growth for London over the medium term and the importance of east London in generating capacity to meet this growth.
The Thames Gateway is the largest regeneration area in the country, and the government recognises the potential within this area to generate economic prosperity and act as a vehicle for delivering a green economy . The London 2012 Games, to be hosted in east London by the five Olympic host borough unit, gives further impetus to the regeneration objectives in the Thames Gateway's development plans.
As part of the Mayor's vision for a low carbon capital, a number of east London boroughs and the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation have been working in partnership with the LDA to develop an action plan for a Green Enterprise District in east London.
Partners are working together to develop and deliver a coherent strategy for attracting low carbon developments. The district will foster infrastructure and systems to enable businesses to reduce their carbon footprint in all their activities and make a substantive contribution to London's economy.
The partnership plans to develop the scheme into an internationally recognisable cluster of enterprises, leading the way toward a sustainable low-carbon future that fosters and supports green enterprise for the UK and the rest of the world.
The district covers approximately 50km2, stretching from the Olympic Park, eastwards along the river to London's border at Havering.
The district has one of the few concentrations of industry and industrial land in London and already has considerable investment in green industries and infrastructure such as:
This complements London's commitment to deliver the most sustainable Olympic Games ever in 2012.
