From Red to Green: making the most of opportunities to build the local green economy

On 3 September 2010, London Councils hosted a workshop on boosting the local “green” economy" - Red to Green: making the most of opportunities to build the local green economy.

In light of the current economic situation, London boroughs are looking to exploit all avenues to attract new, sustainable businesses to their area. Businesses associated with the green economy are a particular potential growth area; particularly given that the Government has announced plans to create a green investment bank that will include green financial products that will allow investment in infrastructure to support the green economy

Presentations were received from the London Development Agency, The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and from Closed Loop Recycling.  The workshop was to able to provide:

  • information on the scale of opportunities currently available
  • Advice as to how to get the work off the ground, including attracting investment
  • Guidance on what factors attract green businesses

As well the information gathering, the event provided an opportunity for Economic Development officers and Environmental officers to begin working together on identifying and exploiting these opportunities.

London Councils will be following up on this event with further workshops targeted at making the most of openings to build the local green economy.
