Completion

At the end of an apprenticeship - where next?

Ideally, if an apprentice has successfully completed their qualification they will be a valuable member of your team, and you will be able to keep them on permanently, perhaps supporting them to take an advanced apprenticeship or other qualification. Of course this is not always possible, so what else can you do to support an apprentice who is leaving your organisation, and do you have a system in place to keep track of where they move on to?

Tracking outcomes

Do you keep track of where your apprentices move on to once they have completed their apprenticeship? This information will be useful to help improve your scheme and also demonstrate the value of apprenticeships for individuals and organisations. You can download a template form Opens in a new window to collect this information.

  • Are they retained in employment by the borough? On what basis – temporary or permanent role? Is their new role related to their apprenticeship?
  • Are they going on to further training or education – perhaps an advanced apprenticeship – with borough or another employer? What level and subject are they studying, is it related to their apprenticeship?
  • Have they got a new job with another employer? What role and sector are they working in? Is it related to their apprenticeship? Is it a temporary or permanent position? Can you identify how the apprenticeship helped them to get the job?
  • Are they unemployed? Is there anything that you could have done to help them to avoid this?
  • Are they self employed? Did their apprenticeship support them in choosing their career path and setting up their own business?
  • Look for patterns to help improve your scheme e.g. can you see any patterns amongst people that do or don’t complete their apprenticeship? Do certain people need extra support to successfully complete their apprenticeship e.g. younger or older apprentices, lone parents or people with a disability?
  • Have you given your apprentices plenty of opportunity to feed back on their experiences and what they would like to do next? How can they help to inform improvements and provide evidence about the value of your scheme?
