London's 2012 Olympic & Paralympics Games will require an estimated 70,000 volunteers. Recruitment of these volunteer will begin in Summer 2010. This will be the biggest volunteer recruitment campaign in the UK’s history, with LOCOG looking for dedicated, passionate and inspirational people representing the diversity of London and the UK to apply for a wide variety of volunteer roles. LOCOG volunteers will be split into specialist roles (e.g. sports-specialists or anti-doping) and generalist roles (e.g. spectator assistants, ticket checkers).
At the same time the Mayor of London is looking for up to 8000 London Volunteers who will be based at 35 sites across London. London Volunteers will play a vital role in providing an outstanding welcome to London’s visitors during summer 2012.
At the same time London boroughs are engaging with local people to establish local Games-time volunteer forces to fill the gap between the LOCOG and London Volunteers. These volunteers will play an important role in helping their fellow Londoners and visitors alike feel a part of Games in 2012. They will do this be using their local knowledge and experience to welcoming people at transport hubs, support local events and celebrations and provide good quality local information about their borough. Also as they will still be here once the 2012 Games have finished, boroughs are and will be a great position to recognise and support their volunteers beyond 2012.
