Inspiring Local Communities

London’s boroughs are using the inspiration of the 2012 Games to involve and inspire their communities to take part.

When London bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games there was a commitment to inspire and engage young people across the UK and the world.  London boroughs are playing their role within this, using the Games to inspire young people to get involved in culture, sport, volunteering and education projects.  Beyond this, boroughs are reaching out to their communities at large across the generations and inviting them to get more involved in their communities and local areas so that it really is ‘Everyone’s Games’.

The boroughs recognise that the 2012 Games and the programmes can bring our communities together. The Olympics and Paralympics can connect people of all ages and all backgrounds and drive social cohesion and inclusion.

They can be a way of exploring and learning about both our own and other people’s backgrounds and can also be a practical way in which people from different walks of life come together to celebrate.

London has one of the most exciting programmes of festivals and events in the world, reflecting and celebrating the diversity of people who live in the city; at no time will this be more apparent than in 2012.

But this isn’t just about a party.  Boroughs are committed to ensuring that there will be lasting benefits through the Games through ongoing ladders of opportunity for young people and projects that capture the community involvement in the lead up to the Games. Several boroughs are offering local communities groups small grants of funding that will allow them to take control of their own legacy and get involved in the way that will leave the best benefits for themselves.
