Policy area: Crime and public protection publications
This is an example of a project from LB Lambeth that uses existing local forums to engage members of the community, to identify key issues affecting them and dialogue with relevant statutory representatives.
For the purpose of rejuvenating the Lambeth LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans) Forum, a launch was held to provide LGBT people with the opportunity to highlight their concerns and engage with relevant statutory bodies, including the Local Authority, the Met. And CPS.
From this event, monthly meetings were organised for LGBT people to attend and discuss issue affecting their lives, of which crime is one issue. The meetings are themed and guest speakers attend from the relevant statutory and voluntary/community agencies. The meetings also have regular attendance by representatives from the Police and the council community safety team and equalities department
One of the forum discussions focussed on the David Morley verdicts which many people, both within and outside the LGBT communities were unhappy with. It is important that local LGBT people have the opportunity to question key agencies, such as the CPS and the Met Police, about why these verdicts were delivered and to discuss how to work together to improve the system for LGBT people.
Essentially, the Forum aims to engage with LGBT people and provide a platform where issues can be voiced and, importantly, heard by the relevant agencies.
