For the seventh year running, a conference culminating in an award ceremony to recognise the achievements of partnership projects between the police and local communities to reduce crime and disorder is being staged; including, for the fourth year running, the specific Safer Travel Award in partnership with Transport for London.
The annual London Problem Orientated Partnership Awards (POP Awards) is a collaboration between the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), the primary law enforcement agency for Greater London; the Safer London Foundation (SLF), helping to make London a safer place to live, work and visit by funding crime reduction/prevention projects throughout London and mentoring ex-offenders into employment, Transport for London (TfL), who are the integrated body responsible for the Capital's transport system; and fund over 2,500 uniformed officers on the transport system: and our latest partner, the London Councils, a think-tank and lobbying organization that promotes the interests of London’s 33 councils and runs a number of pan London services.
The awards celebrate initiatives that develop a partnership approach to problem solving – in essence projects that are responsive to local needs are people-focused and importantly address the causes of crime, not just the consequences. The projects are conceived and put into practice in partnership with local police and communities.
The Safer Communities POP Award was created to encourage and recognise excellence in problem solving. The 2011 winner was Enfield Borough with “Safe as houses” (burglary reduction initiative).
The Safer Travel POP Award was then added to reward partnerships who have improved the safety and security of transport and travelling in London. The 2011 winner was Bromley Borough with “Safer Travel in Orpington”.
The winner from each category won one thousand pounds to assist with further problem solving processes within their area.
