Devolution

Many London residents are concerned about crime, and London Councils believes they should be given every opportunity to influence their local policing agenda. Since 2008, the Safer Stronger Communities team at London Councils has been promoting increased police accountability and the need to give local communities and local authorities a bigger voice and say over how they are policed and how police budgets in their areas are spent.

London Councils has responded to the government’s proposals on police devolution. Read the London Councils' response to 'Policing in the 21st Century'

The work we are currently doing on devolution is currently aimed towards:

  • Promoting devolution by lobbying government and other key partners such as the GLA
  • Trying to harness influence for Councils and local communities in community safety and policing.

 Other areas include:

  • Working with key agencies to ensure that proposals for changes in the criminal justice field do not have a negative impact on communities
  • Working with the five London pilot boroughs and helping to develop proposals that will help cut the current high rates of re-offending which often result in unsustainably large costs to communities and the public purse.
