London Councils aims to ensure that the interests of London, and the boroughs, are fully recognised in the development of community safety policies and in the allocation of funding.
The London Councils Strategic Policy Team takes a lead within London Councils on strategy and policy developments in the community safety field, building links with key partner agencies, supporting boroughs in developing new initiatives and improving services. The team also works closely with London Councils' Crime and Public Protection Executive Member and political party leads.
As part of its community safety remit, the broad aims of the Strategic Policy team are:
Develop a strong relationship with key partners including :
- To lead on the relationship with the Metropolitan Police Service, the new The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPC) and Mayor of London's nominated Policing Deputy.
- To lead on the relationship with GLA in addressing the needs of local authorities and Londoners.
- To lead on the relationship with the London Crime Reduction board and the Delivery Management Group. The London Crime Reduction Board is made up of multiple agencies including the GLA, MOPC and London Councils (3 London Councils Members). The Delivery Management Group is made up of a wider range of key justice agencies including the National Offender Management Service and reports to the board (there is officer level representation).
- To make a case to the London Crime Reduction Board for the allocation of community safety funding beyond 2012/13.
- To contribute to the three priority areas for the London Crime Reduction board – tackling violence against women and girls, anti-violence and reducing re-offending.
To support Local authority’s resilience which includes:
- Managing appropriate links with the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority.
- Working with local authorities on resilience and working to ensure that structures are in place for local authorities so that they are fully prepared for terrorist attacks or other major emergencies.
To promote devolution and influence for Councils and communities in:
- Community safety.
- Policing accountability.
- Reviewing the criminal justice system especially in relation to justice reinvestment and the role of communities.
To support boroughs through the development and review of policy and programmes for tackling crime priorities locally and in partnership across London including the following areas:
- Violence Against Women and Girls
- Anti-violence - addressing serious youth violence and gangs and guns
- Anti-Social Behaviour
- Justice reinvestment and reducing reoffending
