Capital Gains draws on two years of research and consultation by the London Child Poverty Commission.
The Commission’s recommendations are directed at all sectors calling on national government to prioritise raising the job rate for parents in London, with a designated London minister in the Department for Work and Pensions and tougher targets for Jobcentre Plus matched by the necessary resources.
The Commission stresses the importance of sustained jobs that will make a difference to living standards over the long term.
The Commission argues that increases in child tax credits and child benefit, alongside making work pay for families can have a significant impact on child poverty in the capital.
Employers too can lead the way in offering flexible working opportunities, in-work training for parents starting off on the bottom rung of the ladder and tackling issues of discrimination to ensure that all have equal access to jobs.
