Giving children in care a greater say over the services provided for them by their local council is the key to giving them a better possible start in life, according to research published by London Councils.
One of the main ways councils can do this is through ‘Children in Care Councils’ which bring together children in the care of the local authority to discuss how they are cared for and where improvements could be made.
London Councils commissioned for Akamas Care & Education (formerly Care Matters Partnership) to find out about the experiences of boroughs in establishing Children in Care Councils.
The report makes it clear that, while there are some great examples of work across the capital, more work needs to be done to maximise the benefits. An important part of this would be finding ways to ensure youngsters are more involved in developing the services they receive.
