Apprenticeships

Increasing apprenticeships in London

As part of London Councils' work on improving outcomes for 14-19 year olds and reducing worklessness in adults, it is focusing on increasing opportunities for young people to gain key skills and improve their employability.

Apprenticeships are central to this work and the London Borough Apprenticeship Plan sets out how London boroughs aim to improve the number of places offered by and promoted through local government and their suppliers.

London Councils and the boroughs are working towards a pan-London target of 2000 new apprenticeship starts by 2012. By the end of year 2 of the plan (2010/11) boroughs have created just over 1800 apprenticeship opportunities for young people in their local area.

London boroughs have a key role to play in improving apprenticeships across London through their roles as:

  • Local community leaders in place-shaping: working with partners to increase the provision and take-up of Apprenticeships.
  • Major employers: investing in the workforce today to deliver benefits in the future.
  • Procurers of goods and services: with the ability to influence the employment and skills practices of suppliers.
  • Commissioners of 14-19 learning - provision of skills development and leaders in assisting young people's transition to the labour market.
