Improving Choices for Young People Group

Background

One of the many challenges facing local authorities is to ensure that all young people in London receive high quality independent careers education information, advice and guidance (IAG) to enable them to make informed decisions about their future.  Raising standards in this area was identified early by the interim RPG as a key priority to be addressed in the capital.

In response, and in partnership with the Government Office for London (GOL), it established the Achieving Excellence Steering Group to inform and support the development of achieving excellence and improving choices in information, advice and guidance.

The vision was for London Authorities, working with public, private and third sector partners, to put in place 'models of excellence' that demonstrate a universal and seamless offer of IAG for all young people wherever they access it, with coherent and targeted support for those most in need.

Improving Choices for Young People

Following the completion of the Achieving Excellence project and the abolition of GOL in May 2010, the Regional Planning Group (now the Young People's Education and Skills Group) re-constituted the group under the title Improving Choices for Young People (ICYP). The group is made up of representatives from local authorities, practitioners and educational providers and reports through the YPES Director to the Board.

The ICYP Group:

  • supports local authorities to enable informed 14-19 choice and meet their Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) responsibilities in partnership with educators, employers and guidance providers by sharing effective practice;
  • leads the development and implementation of regional practice that delivers local benefits, and facilitates the development of regional guidance to inform pan-London working;
  • provides challenge and support to the continuing development of the London area-wide prospectus UCAS Progress Opens in a new window.
