Welfare reform

The overhaul of the benefits system has great implications for child poverty.  London Councils believes that one of the best ways of tackling child poverty is through parental employment.  For this to be achievable any system of reform must make work more attractive than staying on benefits.

London Councils published research lasy year that shows flaws in Universal Credit – the single credit to replace the current range of income-related benefits for working age households.  The research found that under Universal Credit, many families in London would be worse off than they currently are and some families would be worse off if they increased the hours they worked.

The research can be viewed in our economic development section
