About Our Work

About Our Work

London Councils' Children and Young People team co-ordinates policy work and represents the interests of boroughs on a pan-London basis relating to all aspects of children's services.  The aim of this lobbying role is to improve outcomes for all children and young people in the capital.

Our work

The team liaises closely with London boroughs through groups such as the Association of Directors of Children's Services (ALDCS) on a broad range of issues relating to children, young people and their families.

Our activity includes:

  • digesting and disseminating Government policy affecting children and young people, analysing its impact on London and responding on behalf of London Boroughs on a pan-London basis;
  • Lobbying for the best deal for London on issues such as the capital's chronic shortage of school places;
  • Identifying best practice in early intervention;
  • Improving the quality of 14-19 education and training provision through our Young People's Education and Skills team;
  • Hosting the London Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) and co-ordinating its work.

Particular areas of policy the team focuses on include Academies and Free Schools; School Admissions; School Funding; Safeguarding; Learners with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities; and Post-16 participation amongst others.

Our partners

The team works in close partnership with a range of bodies and organisations including: the Department for Education; the Association of London Directors of Children's Services (ALDCS); the Greater London Authority (GLA); the Local Government Association (LGA); the Youth Justice Board (YJB); NHS London; Metropolitan Police Service; and London’s Voluntary and Community Sector amongst others.
