Culture, Sport and Museum Improvement Programmes

  • By London Councils

The funding for the London Cultural Improvement Programme came to an end in 2011.  This website will remain live to ensure that the learning and resources from the programme are still available.  For an overview of the programme visit the LCIP Index.

Culture and Sport Improvement Toolkit (CSIT)
London was the first region in England to develop a regional programme of improvement for Local Authority Cultural Services built around the Culture and Sport Improvement Tool and Peer Challenge methodology. The training materials, devised by Steve Wood, are available to download from the related documents below.

The programme was rolled out to London boroughs over five tranches and was adopted by 27 London boroughs (with an additional 4 boroughs participating in similar programmes through different providers). This helped to strengthen the improvement network in London and led to individual improvement plans for each local authority. It also enabled us to identify common improvement priorities for the region and offer targeted support during phase two, including Marketing for the Visitor Economy and Community Engagement and Public Consultation.

Local Authority Museum Improvement Programme
The museum improvement programme utilised CSIT and peer challenge methodology to build capacity and improve the strategic positioning of Local Authority Museum Services in London.

24 London boroughs have museum services and of those 23 participated in this programme. The programme took place over 2 tranches and led to individual improvement plans as well as highlighting strategic issues in the sector. At the end of each tranche boroughs were awarded grants from the London Museums Hub to implement improvements that they identified in their plans. The LCIP Map of Best Practice has examples of LAMIP projects and case studies.

The successful LAMIP network and programme is being carried forward by the London Museums Hub from 2011-2012 after which time the responsibility for Museum Development will pass to Arts Council.

The related documents below offer maps of engagement to show which London Boroughs participated, evaluation reports of CSIT and LAMIP as well as the most recently added CSIT Benchmark and all of the training materials from the CSIT training programme.  This material by the London Cultural Improvement Programme is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License.
