  • By selina.young

The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for London will this week (Tuesday 11 October) hold a meeting with the three scheme promoters shortlisted by the Airports Commission for expansion in London and the south-east. Representatives from Gatwick Airport, Heathrow Airport and Heathrow Hub will present their case and answer questions from London MPs in a Select Committee-style event at the House of Commons.

Confirmed speakers are:

  • Steward Wingate – CEO, Gatwick
  • Emma Gilthorpe – Strategy Director, Heathrow
  • Captain William Lowe– Director of Heathrow Hub

The session will address the potential impacts of expansion, as well as assessing the benefits for the capital ahead of the government’s decision on which airport will be given to go ahead on their plans. An announcement is expected in the next few weeks.

Speaking before the meeting, Bob Neill MP Chair of the APPG for London, said:

“The APPG for London is holding its meeting on airport expansion ahead of the government’s decision to ensure London MPs are informed about the impacts and advantages for the city and their constituents. We are grateful to the three promoters of new airport capacity shortlisted by the Airports Commission, who have agreed to speak at our meeting.

“This is the first time the APPG for London has discussed the issue and provides a great opportunity for London MPs to raise questions with representatives face to face.”

Steve Reed Co-Chair of the APPG for London, said:

"London is a global city and the powerhouse of the economy and for us to compete effectively with other world cities we need a decision to be made on expansion. It is vital that we expand airport capacity in the south east to meet London’s and the wider regions’ demand and it is important that MPs have a clear understanding of all the issues before a decision is made.”

The APPG for London, which meets at 14.20 this afternoon, will discuss questions with the scheme promoters on the following topics:

  • Economic impacts
  • Environmental impacts e.g. noise, air quality
  • Costs and timescales for delivery
  • Transport links
  • Employment and skills

The APPG was formed in May 2015 with London Councils undertaking the secretariat responsibilities for the group along with the GLA. It is a cross-party group jointly chaired by Conservative MP Bob Neill and Labour MP Steve Reed. The group has 45 London MPs as members as well as 17 Peers. The group aims to promote London in the interest of all its people, places and businesses as a global city and powerhouse of the economy.
