Mayor backs boroughs’ call to save capital’s post offices

London Councils has welcomed the Mayor of London's commitment to supporting the boroughs in their fight against the closure of 155 post offices across the capital.

It has also backed the decision of Mayor Boris Johnson to continue pursuing a legal challenge to the proposals put forward by Post Offices Ltd.

The Post Office last week announced its intention to shut 155 offices, meaning that in six years a total of 474 post offices will have closed in the capital. This means that London has been the region hardest hit by the total number of post office closures.

London's boroughs have been campaigning against the plans, and some are looking into ways of housing post offices in libraries and other council buildings. Now Mayor Johnson has added his support to the fight against the closures.

In a letter to London Councils Chairman, Councillor Merrick Cockell, the Deputy Mayor for Governance, Ian Clement, said: "Community-based enterprises like post offices provide vital services for Londoners, especially older Londoners and families, and they must be protected."
