London Councils protests against proposed post offices cull
London Councils has voiced the concerns of all boroughs at the disproportionately high number of post offices marked for closure in London compared to the rest of the country.
The concerns were raised in its response to the Post Office’s consultation on its proposals to close offices across the country, including 171 – or one in five – in the capital. London Councils fears that if the proposals go ahead they will have a devastating impact on all Londoners, especially the most vulnerable who rely on post offices to get benefits and pay bills. The closures would also hit shops and businesses across the capital.
In its response, London Councils calls on the Post Office to clarify how the remaining offices will cope with an increase in demand for their services
Speaking out against the closures, Chairman of London Councils Councillor, Merrick Cockell, said:
“Londoners have a basic right to the same level of services as people living in other parts of the country.
“These proposals threaten to strip away the already limited number of post offices in the capital and leave the city with a service with half the capacity of that in the rest of the country.
“We will fight these closures to the very end. The local post office is the lifeblood of London’s streets. Closures of this magnitude would be senseless, short-sighted and potentially damaging to both local businesses and London’s most vulnerable people.”
